On the second day we decided to take it slow. So we did some shopping in St. Germain, paid a visit to the Jardin du Luxembourg and ended our visit at the Musée de la Contrefaçon.

Anyone interested in learning more about counterfeits (fakes) should really pay this museum a visit! The museum was created in 1951 and is managed by the Union des Fabricants, the foremost French anti-counterfeiting association. All the goods on display have been the subject of a court ruling or settlement out of court. You may not be aware of this, but the great majority of these products are infringing trademark rights or copyrights.

We took lots of pictures. Although I have decided to show you only a few fake designer goods, we have also spotted fake car parts, cigarettes, foodstuffs, medicine (such as Viagra) and even pregnancy tests and condoms!

Finally some figures:

• Counterfeiting represents 5 to 10% of the world trade.
• 9,4 million articles seized by the French customs in 2008.
• 178 million goods seized by EU customs in 2008, 79 million in 2007.
• 100,000 lost jobs in Europe. 30,000 in France.

Say No To Fake and help to make this a counterfeit-free world.

I still haven't managed to get my hands on the Mulberry Alexa in oak. The suspense is killing me. I'm on a waiting list and hopefully the stores will receive new supplies soon. I even checked with the Mulberry store in Paris and naturally it was sold out there as well.

In the meantime, I visited the Mulberry site just to have a glance at this beauty and found this fun picture showing the evolution of the Alexa.

As you may already know, this bag is named after the British fashion icon Alexa Chung and is 1 part Bayswater, 1 part Elkington and a dash of vintage inspiration. Isn't she gorgeous? I'll let you know when this beauty is mine! :)

After being obsessed with Chanel for over a year now, I've come off of cloud 9 for a short break. Although Chanel will always be my No. 1, for some weeks my wandering eye couldn't help noticing this beautiful bag, named after one of the current IT-girls Alexa Chung! I absolutely adore her cool style! So it's no surprise that the bag named after her is at least as cool as she is!

The Mulberry Alexa has managed to hit the top of my wish list. Sold out as soon as it hit the store in January this year, but supposedly showing its appearance soon again. I am keeping a close track on new stock arrivals of this baby. And who knows, when Fall has arrived, I might be able to expand my little bag family.

Yesterday evening I attended a lovely dinner with Karin and Véronique from Designer-Vintage and 5 other fabulous girls that own a premium VIP-shop on Designer-Vintage at Momo in Amsterdam. I have often found myself drooling while looking at these VIP-members’ shops with gorgeous (authentic naturally) designer pieces for sale. Now I had a chance to meet them all in person!

She found this gorgeous pair of heels for a steal and they look gorgeous on her! Such a great find! I did not buy anything, but did see something, which I am planning to bring home this Sunday! ;)

Hi guys! I'm back from a short break to Puerto Banus, Marbella, Spain! Oh boy, we took so many pictures, since I bought a new dSLR camera! But before showing you a selection of pictures first some counterfeit news.

Well, basically if you're looking for a nice designer bag (authentic or fake), Marbella apparantly is the place to be. For the ones that never heard of this place before, Marbella is the St. Tropez of Spain. With the mondain harbour Puerto Banus, lots of people find their way to this decadent place to enjoy the sun, good food, beautiful cars and many designer shops.

Brands such as Missoni, Gucci, Tod's Hermès, Dior, Valentino, Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, etc are well presented here. Unfortunately despite the fact that many people in this great place should have plenty of money to spend in one of these stores, lots and lots of them rather spend their money on a fake bag or watch you can easily purchase on the street.

The streets of Marbella are full with counterfeit vendors out in the open offering their fake stuff to tourists as if it's legal merchandise they're selling. On a regular night that we went out to have a few drinks, every 3 minutes these guys would pass by and offer their fake products, most of these fakes being Louis Vuitton bags!

You could tell that Louis Vuitton is very popular in Marbella. For every authentic LV bag you could easily spot 10 fakes. It's shocking to see so many women and (teenage) girls carrying the fake version of the popular Speedy or Neverfull in Damier Azur Canvas.

After being confronted with this tsunami of fakes I think I never ever want to buy a Louis Vuitton again! :(

And you know what? For some strange reason we even felt sorry for these guys. Most probably these guys are just trying to make a living. It's the criminal organisation that is taking care of the supply/logistics of these fakes and underpaying these guys that is the worrying part!

During a walk through my home town I passed by this store showcasting various Birkin and Kelly look-a-like bags in several colors and sizes.

Hermès bags, and especially the Birkin and Kelly have been extremely popular for years and years. Unfortunately, only the rich and famous are able to purchase one. The price of a basic Birkin nowadays is about 6K euro.

Since most bags are normally only protected by copyright, the designer can only act against an identical copy of the design. However, Hermès is one of the few fashion houses that apparantly finds IP-protection very important. They have managed to register a Community Trademark (3D) Registration for the Birkin!

This means that anyone copying the design of the Birkin bag is not only in violation of copyright but also trademark infringement!

With a trademark registration it is possible to act against any use and/or registration of a sign that is (phonetically, visually or conceptually) similar or identical to the registered mark. This will result in a much broader protection than copyright only!

Taking this into consideration, do you believe these bags are infringing Hèrmes' rights?

The World Cup fever has just kicked in and Holland is turning orange everywhere! Normally not really my favorite color. But if it comes to soccer or "Hermès Orange" I simply luv it! Apart from the hefty price tag I have to say boohoo to the extremely long waiting lists at Hermès. Thanks to Designer-Vintage I have the feeling that my Hermès dream bag could be within my reach. Yesterday, on Museumplein in Amsterdam, when I was actually on my way to the Chanel boutique to pick up some goodies I had reserved, I was shocked to see what must have been the worst fake Chanel bag ever! It was such a horrible fake, I even felt sorry for the poor baggy!

Fakes are starting to become a hot topic and I truly believe that there will come a time when people start to realize that fakes are no good! 

Today, widely spread in the media is this story about this 65-year-old Austrian lady that bought something that turned out to be a very expensive fake! It must have seemed too good to be true to her! She managed to negotiate a bargain price for her Louis Vuitton bag and only paid 7 euro instead of 50 euro. Besides, the seller guaranteed her that it was an authentic purse.

But what was she thinking?! Did she really think that she could buy an authentic Louis Vuitton purse for only 7 euro on the beach, while these things normally costs hundreds of euros Well, unfortunately for her it turned out to be a fake (naturally) and the police in Jesolo, near Venice, handed the lady a 1,000 euro fine for buying fake goods which is in violation of local regulations.

This summer more and more places in Italy are starting to conduct a zero-tolerance policy against fake and buyers of fakes are taking a big risk of getting a fine when caught.

Most sellers of fakes on the Italian beaches are immigrants from Africa or Asia and get their supplies from criminal gangs. They can really be a nuisance. There are stories of people that had been approached 48 times a day by these vendors trying to sell their fakes.

It has been reported that 42 million fake products have been confiscated from these sellers on the beach in the period January until April this year.

Best way to avoid getting caught: Don't buy it! You're not saving yourself some (or a lot of) money. You will also avoid being mocked by others who can easily spot you're wearing a fake! ;)

I have to apologize for my absence lately. I have been so caught up with so many things. Busy with my work for one and tracking down my HG bag: the classic Jumbo flap in caviar leather in black from Chanel. Yes!!! I am finally the proud owner of my dream bag! :))

Besides, lately I have also been spending a lot of time on my favorite forum, a total must visit prior to buying your designer bag: The Purse Forum. If you don’t want to get ripped off, do your research on this forum first before buying a designer bag online! It truly helped me a lot (so many friendly and well-informed members there). Thanks to The Purse Forum (TPF for insiders) I managed to stay just a little bit more patient for my bag to arrive. I found out that I was not the only one waiting for the bag. And TPF gave me the info that new bags were arriving in the store, which made me alert for that specific phone call from the Chanel Boutique. I still managed to miss that phone call after all, but that’s a different story. I won’t bother you with my stupidity. ;)

Degenen die me persoonlijk kennen of zo nu een dan een kijkje nemen op mijn site weten dat ik een fel tegenstander ben van namaakspullen. Niet alleen vanuit mijn beroep als merkengemachtigde ben ik er principieel op tegen. Als consument kan ik ook geen argumenten vinden die het voor me rechtvaardigen om me te verlagen tot het aanschaffen van namaak.

Regelmatig is mijn vriend dan ook het slachtoffer van mijn tirades als ik weer eens aan het rondsnuffelen ben op Marktplaats en machteloos moet toezien hoe belachelijk veel namaakproducten daar zonder enige schroom worden aangeboden. Noem het maar gefrustreerd. Want ja, dat ben ik regelmatig over de grote hoeveelheden aangeboden namaak. Enerzijds omdat namaakproducten daar zonder blikken of blozen worden aangeboden, alsof het de gewoonste zaak van de wereld is. Anderzijds omdat veel namaak als zijnde authentiek wordt aangeboden, zodat consumenten die denken dat ze iets authentieks kopen, daarvan de dupe worden.

Nogmaals voor het geval het nog niet duidelijk is: Namaakproducten (zogenaamde counterfeits) zijn ILLEGAAL!!!

Gelukkig is er tegenwoordig een goed alternatief voor sites als Marktplaats mocht je op zoek bent naar tweedehands designerspullen, zoals kleding, tassen en schoenen. Tegenwoordig is er namelijk de website http://www.designer-vintage.com/ . Op deze site kunnen kopers en verkopers terecht om designerspullen te verkopen of te kopen. Met het grote voordeel dat je daar niet geconfronteerd wordt met al die nare advertenties waarin namaak aangeboden wordt. Bovendien heb je bij http://www.designer-vintage.com/ een grotere zekerheid dat je met een authentiek designerstuk te maken hebt.

De dames die de site hebben gecreëerd zijn namelijk niet alleen zeer gepassioneerd met hun vak bezig, ze zijn ook nog eens faliekant tegen namaak! De kans dat je op een namaakexemplaar zal stuiten is zeer klein. Ze houden namelijk zeer goed in de gaten wat er op de site aangeboden wordt en grijpen streng in, wanneer blijkt dat iemand namaak aanbiedt. En uiteraard zijn de designerspullen die op de site verkocht worden zeker de moeite waard. Ik kom dan ook regelmatig op de site om al dat moois te bewonderen!

Michael Tonello is mijn held! Eerder schreef ik dat er een wachtlijst van ca. één jaar is voor de Hermès Birkin. Tonello bewijst dat die wachtlijst onzin is. Hij heeft aangetoond dat Hermès de exclusiviteit van de Birkin kunstmatig hoog houdt door het hanteren van een wachtlijst. Zwem je echter in het geld, dan kun je met gemak direct een Birkin meekrijgen. Dat is als je weet wat de juiste formule is.

Tonello is achter dè formule gekomen en met die formule heeft hij het voor elkaar gekregen binnen no time weer met een Birkin buiten te staan.

Op die wijze heeft hij met gemak in één jaar voor een bedrag van ca. $ 1,6 miljoen aan Hermèsproducten uit gegeven. In totaal heeft hij voor miljoenen aan Birkins weten te bemachtigen.

Zijn avonturen heeft hij nu vastgelegd in zijn uiterst vermakelijke en spannende boek "Bringing home the Birkin". Een aanrader (ik heb het boek echt verslonden)!  Ook weten wat dè formule is? Lees het boek snel!

Het loopt de spuigaten uit al dat namaak! Vroeger konden merken zich focussen op marketing en reclame van hun producten om zo de verkoop van hun producten op te schroeven. Tegenwoordig zijn diverse merken genoodzaakt om een groot gedeelte van hun budget te besteden aan de bestrijding van namaak. Eén van de merken die extreem veel te maken heeft met namaak is Louis Vuitton.

Zij hebben zich zelfs genoodzaakt gezien om op hun site een notice te plaatsen met de melding dat ze een zero tolerance beleid hanteren als het om namaakproducten gaat. Zo hebben ze vorig jaar o.a. 13.000 juridische acties tegen namaakproducten gestart en zijn er vorig jaar 1.000 inbreukmakers gearresteerd.

Let op: authentieke Louis Vuitton producten zijn alleen te koop bij de Louis Vuitton winkels en via de websites www.louisvuitton.com en www.eluxury.com.

Wees dus voorzichtig dat je niet opgescheept wordt met een namaak als je via andere kanalen iets van Louis Vuitton wilt aanschaffen!
Besef je goed dat dit grote budget voor de bestrijding van namaak de consument uiteindelijk direct in de portemonnee zal raken… De prijzen van de authentieke producten zal hoger komen te liggen, door de kosten die gemaakt dienen te worden voor de acties die Louis Vuitton dient te ondernemen.

Mocht je dus jezelf zoet willen houden met een goedkope knock-off totdat je voldoende geld hebt verzameld voor een echte tas? Spaar dan nog maar even wat langer door, je hebt er meteen voor gezorgd dat dat echte tasje ook wat duurder is geworden door jouw knock-offje! Hopelijk neem je dit in je overwegingen mee als je in de verleiding, die namaak heet, wordt gebracht!

Jaren geleden, toen ik me aan het verdiepen was in de wereld die Louis Vuitton heet en E-bay langzaamaan bekendheid verkreeg in Nederland, stuitte ik op een Amerikaanse website waar een advocate voorlichting gaf over de aankoop van Louis Vuitton-tassen op het internet: www.mypoupette.com

Nu, jaren later, is de website uitgegroeid tot een begrip voor iedereen die goed beslagen ten ijs wil komen bij het kopen van een designer tas. My Poupette houdt zich bezig met voorlichting geven over het kopen van designertassen en het controleren van de echtheid van de op internet aangeboden tassen. In het begin was dit beperkt tot Louis Vuitton, maar tegenwoordig kan de bezoeker ook bij hen terecht als ze de echtheid willen checken van tassen van vele andere merken.

Aan deze service zijn echter wel kosten verbonden, maar dan heb je wel de garantie dat je met een authentiek product te maken hebt.

Het zijn echte klassiekers de tassen van Hermès. De twee meest bekende tassen zijn de Kelly en de Birkin bag, vernoemd naar Grace Kelly en Jane Birkin. Zo werd Grace Kelly gespot met een Hermès tas waarna dat model vernoemd werd naar Grace Kelly.



De Birkin tas werd speciaal voor Jane Birkin ontworpen, nadat ze in het vliegtuig zat te klagen over haar toenmalige tas waar niet al haar spullen in pasten. Toevallig zat ze naar de directeur van Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas die vervolgens speciaal voor haar de Birkin tas heeft ontworpen. Het gerucht gaat trouwens dat ze wel gewoon heeft moeten betalen voor de tas.



Het zijn beide zeer klassieke modellen die nooit out of fashion zullen zijn, omdat ze ‘groter’ zijn dan de jaarlijkse IT-bags. Victoria Beckham is een groot fan van de Birkin tas en heeft naar het schijnt een collectie aan Hermès tassen goed voor een bedrag van over ruim € 1.000.000,--. Ze heeft ze in alle kleuren, formaten en materialen.



De tassen zijn zeer gewild, want zeer duur en exclusief. Gemiddeld is er een wachtlijst van één jaar mocht je een tas willen aanschaffen en prijzen zijn vanaf ca. € 5.000,--, maar kunnen oplopen tot ruim over € 100.000,-- afhankelijk van de exclusiviteit van het materiaal van de tas. In één van de afleveringen van Sex and the City speelt de Birkin zelfs een hoofdrol. Samantha gebruikt, als personal assistant van Lucy Liu, de naam van haar werkgeefster om sneller bovenaan de wachtlijst te komen voor een Birkin.



Gelukkig is Hermès de beroerdste niet en bieden ze nu een mooi alternatief voor iedereen die alleen maar kan dromen van de Kelly of de Birkin en er toch één wil bezitten. Op de website van Hermès kun je nu zelf je eigen papieren versie van de Kelly downloaden en knutselen.



Mocht je wel zwemmen in het geld en niet het geduld hebben om op een wachtlijst te staan voor je eigen Birkin of Kelly, kun je ook bij Createurs de Luxe terecht. Op deze site kun je direct aan je eigen Hermès komen, als je maar bereid bent om direct 10K neer te tellen. Voor een iets betaalbaar alternatief kun je ook designer-vintage.com in de gaten houden. Hier worden zo nu en dan tweedehands tassen aangeboden, al ben je dan nog steeds duizenden euro’s kwijt.

Ik droom nog even verder en klus mijn eigen papieren Hermès.

Begin oktober was het weer zover: de Parijse Fashionweek. Alle grote modehuizen toonden hun lente-collectie 2009. Terwijl wij hier zitten te verkleumen in dit natte vochtige über-Hollandse weer, toonden de modellen ons wat ons te wachten staat, zodra wij onze dikke lichaamscontouren verhullende truien weer uit durven te trekken.

Wat valt op? Dat de mode zich blijkbaar niets aantrekt van de kredietcrisis. Veel decadentie en hebberig makende kleding en accessoires. Kaiser Karl had weer groots uitgepakt en had de gevel van de Chanelwinkel aan de Rue Cambon compleet laten nabouwen als achtergronddecor.

Over de top-decadentie: de “Ik wil ‘m hebben en heb er geen zak aan, misschien kan ik mijn gitaarspelend vriendje overhalen om het nut ervan in te zien”-gitaartas van Chanel:



En anders meteen een goed excuus om dan maar gitaar te leren spelen, want dan neem ik er meteen die gitaar bij:

Het blijft een klassieker, de Chanel 2.55. Dé tas ontworpen door Coco Chanel die vrouwen voor het eerst de gelegenheid gaf de tas als schoudertas net onder de oksel te dragen en vernoemd naar de periode waarin de tas ontworpen was, februari 1955. Karl Lagerfeld heeft de tas weer helemaal geherintroduceerd een paar jaar geleden en sindsdien is het een klassieker die continu in de collectie te vinden is bij Chanel.

Het is een must have voor vele fashion-minded vrouwen. Je merkt dat niet alleen aan de vele celebrities die gespot zijn met de tas, maar ook aan het grote aanbod aan namaakvarianten van deze tas. Karl Lagerfeld heeft ooit eens gezegd dat hij het als een compliment beschouwd als mensen zijn ontwerpen namaken, maar of hij daarmee namaak in dit opzicht bedoelt, betwijfel ik…


 

Vele merken laten zich door hem inspireren door ook het doorgestikte leer in hun tassen te verwerken, of door mantelpakjes te maken van tweed. Maar counterfeits… dat wordt daarmee niet bedoeld.

Zoek ‘Chanel tas’ op Ebay of Marktplaats en je wordt overspoelt met het grote aanbod aan Chanel-tassen voor slechts enkele tientjes. Als je weet dat een Chanel tas ca € 1.700 kost, is dit overduidelijk 100% fake.

Ook ik ben een fan van deze tas en heb menigmaal Chanel 2.55 ingetypt op Ebay en Marktplaats. Tussen de vele namaaktassen vindt je dan ook voldoende aanbod voor de “authentieke” versies van deze tas. De prijskaartjes van deze tassen zijn niet mis, je bent toch ook weer gauw € 1.200, € 1.400 tot en met € 2.400 kwijt. Daarbij heb je niet de garantie dat je echt een authentieke tas te pakken hebt. De namaakversies zijn ook bijna niet van echt te onderscheiden.


Echt of nep?

Ondanks dat ze vaak vele foto’s van de tas tonen en uiteraard ook de kenmerkende zogenoemde “authenticiteitskaart” tonen, ik weet uit ervaring dat namakers deze kaart met gemak ook na weten te maken.

Uit ervaring? Ja, ook ik heb me, toen ik jonger was, laten verleiden en me schuldig gemaakt aan het kopen van namaak. Het is immers maar al te verleidelijk als je geen geld hebt en toch graag zo’n mooie designertas wilt bezitten. Destijds was de Chanel Cambon net geïntroduceerd en onder andere Madonna liep ermee te paraderen. Ik wist het zeker, ik moest ook zo’n tas hebben. Kosten? Meer dan € 2.000. Na wat gesurf op internet stuitte ik op een site die wel omschreven kan worden als "counterfeit-heaven".

Ik vond een perfecte namaak, inclusief een nagemaakte authenticiteitskaart voor ca. € 175, nog een flink bedrag, als je je bedenkt dat het namaak is. Het was dan ook perfect nagemaakt. Ik liep er mee in Parijs langs de Chanelwinkel en de deur werd al voor me opengemaakt toen ik slechts passeerde met de tas.

Helaas zag de tas er ook voor dieven zeer echt uit, ik werd bestolen van de tas met complete inhoud toen ik schoenen aan het passen was en even niet oplette. Dat was voor mij ook meteen het teken dat namaak overduidelijk niet loont!

Ik besloot dat het ook maar beter was zo. Het voelde niet lekker zo’n neptas, ik wist zelf dondersgoed dat het nep was en als mensen me vroegen of het een “echte” was, dan moest ik met schaamte bekennen dat het een nepper was.

Enige dagen geleden was ik in de Chanel-winkel en daar vertelde de verkoopster me dat ze regelmatig vrouwen in de winkel ontvangt die een tas op het internet hebben gekocht voor het volle pond en vervolgens bij hen de tas laten controleren op authenticiteit. Helaas blijkt dan maar al te vaak dat ze dan toch een namaakversie gekocht hebben. Auw!!!

Wil je na dit verhaal toch nog graag een Chanel-tas aanschaffen op het internet, doe dan vooraf goed je huiswerk. Laat je niet oplichten! Heb je nog vragen stuur me dan een e-mail.
